At the same time that Charles Bronson is looking for the killer, his wife go to a hospital and the doctor said that she doesn't have serious problem. But she becomes worse and worse until she dies.

The movie you are describing starred Frank Sinatra as a New York police detective searching for a serial killer who uses a mountain-climbers ice axe to murder random victims. His wife is played by Faye Dunaway who goes into the hospital with kidney problems and later dies. By the way, this was Sinatra's last movie.
